Who’s That Girl?! Kirstina Colonna

Vorige week: Franceska

Kirstina Colonna

Every hour, more than 10,000 sharks are slaughtered. That makes the death count around 100 million each year. While sharks are eaten all around the world, there is no greater threat to their survival than the devastating shark fin trade. Last month, President Trump made America complicit in the slaughter. At a state dinner to welcome the American President, Vietnam served Trump shark fin soup. Shark fin soup — a "delicacy" prized for its taste and texture — is a brutal dish. Fisherman, encouraged by high prices for the shark fin, catch hundreds of thousands of sharks a day, then slice off their fins while they are still alive. They often don't even bother with the rest of the fish, instead, they toss it back into the water — suffering and in pain — to sink to the bottom and drown. Globally nations are taking measures to stem the future decline of the shark population. But they need to do more. Malaysia, and China — the world's largest consumer of shark fin soup — have banned the dish from official functions. Vietnam, however, elevated the soup to presidential status when they decided to serve it to Mr. Trump. This dish is destructive, not delicious, and it's time Vietnam take it off the menu. Ask Vietnam to follow in Malaysia and China's footsteps and ban this shameful dish from official functions and work to end the sale of shark fins in their country altogether.

Erik van Sebille, an oceanographer at Utrecht University who studies ocean circulation and plastic pollution, told Hakai the findings, while shocking, weren’t unexpected. “Plastic in the ocean is an atrocity; a testament to humanity’s filthy habits,” he said. I used to carry and refill plastic bottles but am now making the conscious effort to use Reusable glass bottles for the planet and my health. Plastic in the ocean now outnumbers sea life six to one. All (YES, ALL) sea turtle species have been documented with plastic in or around their bodies. One million sea birds are killed annually from plastic in our oceans. The plastic contains BPA and phthalates, both of which have a huge negative impact on our bodies. They also take 25 per cent of their volume in oil to make each bottle. That’s a lot of fossil fuels. What have you been doing to save our oceans? ♻️Re-use bags 💦re-fill bottles 🚮 Beach Cleanups 🚫Say no to plastic straws 🚫Say no to plastic cutlery #recycle #reuse #beachcleanup

Calvin Klein was an early adopter of animal-friendly designs. Founded in 1968, the company didn’t go fur-free until 1994. He stated that he would no longer use fur due to his own reflections on the humane treatment of animals and the fact that the fur segment of his business simply did not fit with his corporate philosophy any longer. Fortunately, he ended all fur licensing agreements after 17 years and now offers faux-fur designs as well as faux leather. Real and faux patent leather look exactly the same. Hopefully with the rise of the Vegan movement Mr. Klein will make the choice to evolve Calvin Klein into a full-fledged Vegan brand. #calvinklein #calvinkleinunderwear #vegan #fauxfur #fauxleather
